Parent's Review of Gyeonggi Suwon International School in Suwon, Korea

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Gyeonggi Suwon International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Suwon

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

k-8 (adding year 9 nect year)

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus/walk/car

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

There are many activities available to the students. Both Elementary and Middle School compete in Jamborees against other international schools. The sports are soccer, basketball, volleyball, swimming. The PTA also run afterschool activities every Tuesday. My girls do Ballet and Taekwondo. But there are many other things available - art, korean fan dance, gallery of games, robotics, swimming, praise and worship and Korean language classes. The school has bands, choirs, and each year they put on two plays.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Initially much information was provided to the parents on how to make the move as stress free as possible. What I have liked is that the many cultures at GSIS are cherished and the students learn and respect the different cultures of the children in the class.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

This is the first year of GSIS so at this stage there is not a huge body of parents. We have a PTA that is truly involved in the school. Each year level has room mothers and there are many events that happen during the day amongst the mothers. Parents volunteer to work in the library and in the classrooms as well. I really like the open door attitude at GSIS. It is no problem for me to pop by and see my child or help in her room, whenever I am free.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Remember this school opened it's doors for the first time on September 18 2006. It is a new school, but if this is the first year, I am excited about what is to come. I truly expected there to be a lot of teething problems, but I have been constantly impressed at the level of professionalism the school has acheived in a short time. The staff here are fantastic.
