What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

International School of Latvia

In what town or city is this school located?

Jurmala

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

PK-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

There is an excellent bus that the school provides from Riga to Jurmala. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Jurmala from Riga. The other option is to live in Jurmala. Jurmala is a wonderful beach community and was the favorite resort area of the Soviets.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school rents space from a local horticultural school. The building was constructed during Soviet times but the school is in the process of building a new school located in Pinki. Pinki is located between Riga and Jurmala and very close to the new US Embassy. The school will be state of the art and will have waiting lists. The director has said anyone enrolled prior to the opening of the new school will have a spot.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

ISL is the only international school that has a certified special needs teacher. They are also the only school in Latvia that is a PK -12 IB World School. They also are the only fully accredited school is Latvia with the Council of International Schools. When we looked at schools to send our elementary children it was important for us to have an accredited school. The teacher are international so they understand the need to help with the transition.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a very welcoming PTO organization. They are very friendly and a good resource if you need any help relocating.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Check out both schools as we did but chose ISL. They have the standardized test scores proving your child will get a great education.
