Parent's Review of Tokyo YMCA International School in Tokyo, Japan

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Tokyo YMCA International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Tokyo

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American

What grade levels are represented at this school?

pre-K through grade 6

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Students use the school bus, subway train, bicycles and walking to get to school.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school is in the Tokyo YMCA building. The building has a large swimming pool, gym, and tennis/soccer courts on the roof. Students at the school use all of them for activities during and after school.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The curriculum is American-based. The school uses American textbooks to support what is being taught, but also use lots of other resources and materials. Their reading and writing program is strong. I know other parents whose children have attended this school and graduated to other international schools in Tokyo and have done very well.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a PTA structure. It is more informal, but specific parents communicate with the administration and other parents. Each classroom has one or two parent volunteers who help to organize everyone for school events. Most parents are supportive. The PTA organizes some fundraisers throughout the year and donates money for school improvements.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

If you don't have problems with a smaller school, Tokyo YMCA International School is a good school. The class sizes are smaller. The curriculum is all taught in English and their reading/writing program is good. The administration also helps interested parents with children graduating from the school to locate and communicate with various other international middle schools in the Tokyo area.
