Parent's Review of Jumeirah Primary School in Dubai, UAE

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Jumeirah Primary School

In what town or city is this school located?

Dubai

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British curriculum with a mix of nationalities

What grade levels are represented at this school?

KG-6

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

parents and bus service

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Teachers must teach one after school activity per term and there are several activities offered through organizations requiring payment.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Nothing.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The parent organization is a joke. Parents are told they are an integral part of the school's development and that their opinions are always welcomed and encouraged. It's just lip service. Requests concerning problems such as parking (exceedling inadequate and dangerous) have been ignored as well as a host of other issues plaguing parents.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I would avoid any GEMS managed school. Mr. Varkey has become very wealthy through his schools and in raising their fees. In fact, three years ago, he tried to raise the fees retroactively by asking parents to pay the increase on the previous term's fees. Luckily, the Ministry didn't allow it to happen but did okay the increase. The fees have been increased steadily over the course of the last five years. A very telling testament to GEMS management is the high rate of teacher turn over. If you're looking for quality British curriculum education, try Jebel Ali Primary, DESS or JESS at Arabian Ranches. GEMS managed schools are definitely for profit with very few advantages going to the children.
