Parent's Review of Kemer Koleji Zeynep Mutlu Foundation in Istanbul, Turkey

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Kemer Koleji Zeynep Mutlu Foundation

In what town or city is this school located?

Istanbul

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Local, Turkish owned and operated, supposedly adapting Canadian educational system and standards

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most children are taken to and from school on service buses. Others are picked up and dropped off by their parents.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school buildings are relatively new, big and airy, the school looks very modern and progressive - this is very deceptive. There are clubs, drama, chess, sports etc. offered by the school, but the don't make up for the dull, rigid rote-memorization curriculum and the poor quality staff.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Honestly, nothing. We were told in our initial interview with the principal that in the first grade class my son was entering about half of the children were native english speakers and would receive english lessons seperately from the less advanced turkish children. Not so, my son was the only native speaker in his class and was so bored and frustrated, but no one seemed to care.

School to parent, teacher to parent communication was so poor we never knew what was going on in our son's classroom.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

We didn't get involved with the PTA. To be honest, one-on one communication with the teachers was difficult enough.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Look elsewhere.
