Parent's Review of Dubai American Academy in Dubai, UAE
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Dubai American Academy
In what town or city is this school located?
Dubai
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International and American
What grade levels are represented at this school?
4 years old through grade 11
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Most come by car but some use a private bus service.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The facilities are new. The main building has only been in use for a year and a half. The gymnasium, swimming pool and soccer field are new additions in the past few months. The auditorium and cafeteria will soon be finished, eshallah.
The extra-curricular activites are growing. Parents are encouraged to become involved and some have in the elementary. The school became a member of EMAC and sent a team to Beirut for Volleyball. They hosted the JV soccer tournament this fall. It is a new school so things still have a ways to go to provide a full program.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The counselor meets with children when they are new and also when she knows they are leaving. New students are introduced during the daily morning assemblies in the elementary. All the students are encouraged to help them feel welcome.
The curriculum is American but moving from the British system hasn't been a problem. I've seen many kids from other countires do well after a few weeks.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
The parent group does organize social activites for the students. They provided a great Halloween carnival and dances for the older students. It is mainly a social event planning group.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
The school is growing very fast. If your child has any learning disabilities, the school will tell you that they do not have any support for them and that you should look somewhere else. They tell you that they want the best for the child and not just your money. The environment is very international and friendly. You feel welcome in the building. I love the celebrations of the different country holidays.
