Parent's Review of American Academy for Girls in Salwa, Kuwait

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American Academy for Girls

In what town or city is this school located?

Salwa

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American

What grade levels are represented at this school?

KG-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

None walk. All take a school van or are driven to school.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities consist of one building with 800 students in it, crammed into small classrooms. The facilities were great when it opened but it does not have space for this many girls. The extra-curricular activities consist of escorted trips to malls so that girls can shop in peace.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

There are few girls from my country. Most are from Kuwait or dual-nationals. Yes, there are programs to help girls leaving the school for college in the West or further education in an English-speaking country.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

We have a lot of fund raising and there is a lot of pressure on parents and teachers to raise money for the school. The director of activities is a well-known woman with a taxi company who loves the almighty dollar. Woe unto you if you do not work her activities. Yes, there is a PTA and it is active. Only women may participate, so there is a lot of cackling. The Americans are particularly vicious cows.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Here is Salwa there is a choice of about 6 British or American schools. The British School of Kuwait is huge, has a wonderful reputation. There are some odd American schools with no Americans in them. Universal American School imprisons its teachers behind barbed wire, and has the worst reputation of any school in the country. Thus, for a girl, we are a good choice. One just has to understand what happens when 800 girls with all girl faculty are couped up in one building and inside all day.
