Parent's Review of BIS Brasilia International in Brasilia, Brazil

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

BIS Brasilia International

In what town or city is this school located?

Brasilia

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American with an international setting

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre-K to 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Private or Embassy-arrangged Bus or car. No school bus.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

BIS is a small school with a great view of the city. The peacefull setting is definetely a plus. The school facilities are small and simple. BIS has a cafeteria, science lab, computer lab, library, playground, soccer field and pool. The School offers soccer, ballet, arts and crafts, cooking, swimming etc.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The School has a very diverse student population. The students come from different ethic and religious backgrounds, although BIS is an American Christian School which follows an American curriculum. The small classrooms allow the children to obtain the extra attention that all kids deserve. It seems (with our experience) that the teachers work with each student to make sure they achieved their maximum potential. This individual attention is priceless. Because of this low student/teacher ratio the kids adapt very well to their new enviroment. Our 6 and 11 year old children spent 3 years at BIS. The solid academic knowledge was a plus when we moved to our new post. We went from a school with 100 students to a school with 1400 students with absolutely no problem. They were confident and academically very well prepared for their new school.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The school has a PTA (called PAO for "Parents Assisting Others"). PAO facilitates integration among parents, teachers, and staff and also contributes to social projects in the area (e.g., support for an orphanage). Kids and parents are encouraged to participate in these life enriching experiences. PAO organizes events like children's day, movie nights, cultural presentations, family nights, relaxation technique etc.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The school provides a nice and safe environment and solid education that respects cultural and religious diversity. Our kids learned a great deal about themselves and how to be not only succesful in school but also in life. I highly recommend the school, specially for primary school. Since the student teacher ratio is low, classes tend to fill out quickly.
