Parent's Review of Franciscan School in Seoul, Korea

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Franciscan School

In what town or city is this school located?

Seoul

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International - American

What grade levels are represented at this school?

nursery (2.5 years) - kindergarten (5 years)

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

By bus and car

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The PTA organizes some after-school activities but the choice is very limited.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Based on our experience with our daughter who is in pre-school, we find the teaching at this school to be excellent. The teaching staff is motivated and very caring.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There are some social events organized by the PTA.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The teaching staff are all native-English speakers, and our child thrives in this very dynamic and supportive teaching environment. However, the children in our daughter's class are mostly from non-native English families. As a result, there is some cultural distance between ourselves and the other parents. For example, there is a lot of fuss over staff and children's birthdays, and the children's birthday parties are held during school time rather than on the weekend or after school. Amazingly, parents who volunteer to be class moms seem to imagine themselves to be class leaders and try to impose their will on others.
