Parent's Review of British School of Houston in Houston,

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

British School of Houston

In what town or city is this school located?

Houston

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British, but becoming more international

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Nursery - IB Diploma

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

A number take the school bus and other car pool.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

School runs extra-curricular clubs three nights a week and most of the buses, except Sugarland, do a second run on those nights. Usually a good mix of different activities organised into age groups.

Buildings are a bit tired, but are in the process of being refurbished. This work has just started but fingers crossed a lot will be done over the summer break.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Follows the English curriculum so is easy to slot in if that is the system the child is currently following. 99% expat population so full of children who are used to moving on and making new friends. Staff and pupils friendly and welcoming generally and there are some parent groups that are also helpful when you are trying to find your feet.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a parent social group that organises events for parents and staff such as balls, cheese and wine and quiz evenings. A lot of the parents have their own informal coffee groups etc that you can find out about once you're in school.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Still a relatively new school and has only been open for 6 years. Has grown rapidly in that time, but older groups still a bit small. GCSE and IB only have about 85 pupis across all four years so it could be tough socially. On the plus side those who do elect to stay to do IB get almost one to one tuition. However, there is no proven track record here at present.
