Parent's Review of Korea International School in Bundang, Korea

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Korea International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Bundang

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Follows American curriculum

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

70% take the school bus.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school expanded and moved to Bundang area last year (2006). So, I am pretty confident that the school's facility is by far the best among other international schools in Korea.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Since I came from the States, the transition was pretty smooth. There isn't any specific program, but you can meet some of the teachers prior your decision of schools. You get a general understanding and feeling of the school, curriculum, students and more. This helped us alot and they were really friendly. Once you are accepted, you also get to meet the principal and your homeroom teacher before the first day of school which is very nice for newcomers. I was able to ask all kinds of questions and have my doubts removed.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

For elementary school, there is an active PTO, a room mother and parent advisory council. I don't participate much because of work, but a lot of other mothers seem to volunteer in lunch time, in library and also in classes too. The relationship overall between teachers, parents and students are good here.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The ethnicity of KIS, like other international schools in Korea, is 90% Korean. However, expats shoudn't fear this. The Westerners that do have their children at KIS appreciate the influence of "Korean" students because their kids now take education seriously - so does mine. As long as the school offers a well-rounded education with excellent support from the teachers, I really didn't care about the ethnicity and KIS hasn't dissappointed me. Of course, there are some things I would like the school to change, but to be honest, which schools are perfect?
