Parent's Review of Windhoek Internationak School in Windhoek, Namibia
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Windhoek Internationak School
In what town or city is this school located?
Windhoek
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International (but American bias)
What grade levels are represented at this school?
KG-12
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Private car
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
Limited. There is little evidence of what the enormous school fees are being spent on. Extra curricular activities often cancelled due to lack of interest.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
Nothing. Emphasis on development of the child as a whole means appears to imply that discipline in the classroom is irrelevant. The standard of teaching is poor - particularly in mathematics - and the curriculum is lagging behind that in the UK. We have tried, without success, to move our child to another local school, but places are always oversubscribed. Consequently, we are now seriously considering a prep school in the UK.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
Good, but then am more concerned about the standard of teaching for my child than social events put on by the PTA!
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Don't. The school charges expats huge fees and local residents pay greatly reduced ones. St Paul's and St George's are good alternatives to WIS, but there is no guarantee of a place.
