Parent's Review of Windhoek International School in Windhoek, Namibia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Windhoek International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Windhoek

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

KG-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are fairly basic. The classrooms are large and have a good atmosphere. Cool in winter and all have fans for summer. Classes finish before the worst afternoon heat in summer. There is a sportsfield and a gym, in which basketball and indoor football can be easily played. The school has access to swimming and tennis facilities at the University of Namibia and cricket field and nets at the Transnamib sports club at which international cricket matches have been played recently. Sports facilities are set to improve. There are a large number of well attended extra-curricular activities - basketball, volleyball, football (association), cricket, table-tennis, tennis, chess, computer club as well as various arts and crafts activities.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The school has a warm welcoming atmosphere. My child (grade 8) made friends easily and enjoyed the sporting activities. As his main foreign language experience was Arabic (we were in Syria previously) he was placed in a beginner's class for French in a small group and has gone a long way to catching up with more experienced students. He has also had extra lessons in Mathematics at which he is exceptionally talented, so that he will be able to enter into a top set in school in the UK when he returns at the end of this academic year. Science teaching, especially Chemistry and Physics have been excellent.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a PTA that has organised several Friday evening social events, admittedly thinly attended, but the international day fundraising event was well attended and highly successful. This gave the opportunity to meet parents of all the international communities in Windhoek, as well as from the local families.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I would have no hesitation in recommending Windhoek International School. Talented students have achieved excellent results in the IGCSE examination and in the IB Diploma programme and I am confident will continue to do so. Students with Special Educational Needs are given a great deal of support and encouragment. As a parent my experience and the experience of my son have been wholely positive.
