Parent's Review of The International School of Macao (TIS) in Macao, China

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

The International School of Macao (TIS)

In what town or city is this school located?

Macao

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Canadian, Alberta curriculum

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K1-Grade 11

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most kids have rides with family members. There are school buses running to major areas where expats live. Macao is small and so living anywhere is not that far from school.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school's facilities are still sub-standard. It uses the adjacent government facilities when it can. Kids are not given regular lab classes.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

No much. We have to prepare our kids ourselves. The Alberta's math curriculum is strong in helping kids develop problem solving skills but does not provide enough drills. Kids are expected to learn Canadian history, which makes the school less international.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is an active Parent Association. Members are very friendly and supportive. For newcomers to Macao, they can get lots of good info. A must place to go for meeting other expats in this small city.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Most teachers are very good, kind and professional. There are sports clubs and some extra-curricular activities for kids. But if you look for organized sports activities with some inter-school competition, it is totally absent in Macao. TIS is not an exception. Unfortunately, the school is surrounded by huge casino buildings. Unless you have to come to Macao with your family, TIS would not be your choice.
