Parent's Review of American School Foundation in Mexico City, Mexico

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American School Foundation

In what town or city is this school located?

Mexico City

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K1-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

All must pay for bus service. Although some do not use it. For Kinder there is a separate bus in the afternoon. The bus service is well organized and convenient in a city of this size with so much pollution.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Large. The high school is being completely rebuilt. The middle school is beautiful.

The atheletics fields are large, a difficult thing to find in the urban area of Mexico City.

The kinder has a separate building across the street, which is nice for the little ones. It could use a little facelift, but not all schools are brand new.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

There was a new international families breakfast at the beginning of the year, with psychologists discussing the issues faced. There was a speaker about cross cultural communication, which is offered in both English and Spanish. Some of the expat families have also started a mentor group.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The PTA is strong. There are also local guided tours for parents. There are cliques, but there are those at any school.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Attitude is important. I have had my children in more than 1 school in Mexico City. There is a strong culture here, in every school. Since there is also more than one school now catering to ex-pats, the amount and power in numbers is not there in any one of them.
