Parent's Review of American School of The Hague in Wassenaar, Netherlands

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American School of The Hague

In what town or city is this school located?

Wassenaar

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Blend of International and American curriculums

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre-K - 13

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus, walk, bike

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Excellent facilities, well-staffed, good range of extra-curriculars, especially strong in drama. Band, Jazz Band, Choir, Model UN, multiple sports in middle and high school, Odessey of The Mind competition, fine arts, scouts.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The school has developed a wonderful transitions program over the last 5 years to serve the students and parents, with a weaker link for the faculty. The program has been presented at many ECIS conferences. Families are contacted from pre-arrival and followed through leaving. There are student ambassadors in MS and HS.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Excellent PTA, strong parental imvolvement although primarily from the North American groups. This is one of the most active schools we've participted in.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

If you want the availability of both American and International studies (AP and IB) with an American spirit of community and lots of extra-curriculars, this is the school for you. While there are some weaker teachers, the overall product is good. Americans who are coming from a very competitive suburban school district might find ASH a bit less rigorous and families from other countries might find the school challenging in some areas. Lots of team projects and public speaking are expected - more "American" in flavor. Graduates get into fine universities world-wide. The kids all have great self-esteem.
