Parent's Review of American School of Milan in Milan, Italy

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American School of Milan

In what town or city is this school located?

Milan

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International-American

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Early Childhood to grade 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

An excellent and extensive bus service from many areas both in and out of the city.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

I have seen all the school in Milan and this is by far the best. They have 9 acres of grounds, a fantastic gym and library. Unbeatable on the International school circuit here in the city. They are currently contructing new science labs, classrooms and a new gymnasium. This is going make the facility exceptional by 2009.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The school has an American/International focus. The International Baccalaureate program is taught here and as many of you know, this is a top academic program, much admired in colleges around the world. Students in high school can also prepare for SATs. Frankly the international focus is great for your kids, especially with the nationalities being so varied. Someone said that there is a multiage program through to high school! Well, no there is not. They offer multiage grades 1/2 and grades 3/4 only, and then you have the choice - same age or multiage. Academics in my mind (and I have kids in Elementary, Middle and High School)are strong. Staff are supportive and kids are happy.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The PTO organizes all kinds of activities. Unlike a previous comment I read here, it is not mandatory

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

This is a wonderful facility, great teachers (I believe two thirds have a Masters degree) and happy kids. The program is stimulating and all kids have laptops from grades 6-12. Technology is strong, the library is huge (by international standards) and your kids get a great international experience.
