Parent's Review of British International School, Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
British International School, Vietnam
In what town or city is this school located?
Ho Chi Minh City
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International - British
What grade levels are represented at this school?
Pre-school - Yr. 13
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Private car, school bus, bike or walk.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The school has 3 campuses; 1 downtown (Primary only) and two in a suburb called An Phu which includes Primary & Secondary. Facilities are good and continue to expand as the school grows. 3 "playing" fields (though small) and (1) 25m swimming pool in each of the An Phu campuses. Clubs are available after school and other sport activities are available on Saturday.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The curriculum is IPC (International Primary Curriculum) for Primary and IB for Secondary. Britain continues with the more formal English National Curriculum - while the IPC is much less structured somewhat "wishy-washy".
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There are no social activities available for parents through the school. A PTG is in place but the activities they organize are dull and uneventful and rather than help provide useful and necessary items for the school & the students, the funds collected through PTG events continue to be diverted to the same orphanage year after year.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
The school is a good school (at the moment probably the best in HCMC). Nevertheless, as a BIS parent you must be willing to provide extra time/support for your child(ren) in order to sustain your child's learning so that the transition to your home country/new country is assured.
