Parent's Review of Carmel School in Hong Kong, Hong Kong
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Carmel School
In what town or city is this school located?
Hong Kong
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
American accredited, Modern Orthodox (Jewish)
What grade levels are represented at this school?
nursery through 9th grade
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
School bus or car
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The nursery and pre-K facility are well-stocked, warm and inviting, with appropriately sized amenities and bright colored art work. The facility has a kosher kitchen and a pool on site.
The middle school is in an older building, with limited areas for sports and a moderately sized function room that doubles as an auditorium. It does however have a library, science lab, and computer lab.
The high school is brand new and has fully modern and spacious facilities.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The school was truly a blessing during our transition to Hong Kong. Our two children felt right at home in the warm, intimate classes, and appreciated the chance to continue their Jewish education as well as expand their English-language education (they had been schooled previously in Europe).
The school leadership and its teachers take a particular pride - and delight - in understanding each child 'inside out' and tailoring a learning experience for him/her, both in the classroom and in school social / sports / activities settings.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There is an active and welcoming PTA, perhaps in part because the school is parent-founded and the parents remain actively attentive to all aspects of school life. (At times this makes me feel sorry for the administration, but...I guess it's better than the other extreme.) The school has gone out of its way to respond to specific parent requests (language classes, food choice, activities, etc.).
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
We are thrilled with Carmel, and would recommend it to anyone who wishes their child to have a robust international education (based on the American model) as well as a solid grounding in Jewish studies.
