Parent's Review of Mutiara International Grammar School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Mutiara International Grammar School

In what town or city is this school located?

Kuala Lumpur

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Malaysian with an International title

What grade levels are represented at this school?

3-16

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

The majority of senior school pupils either walk or arrive by car, some by school bus but in some cases it is actually cheaper to get a taxi!

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities are old and little money is given to improve them. The school was an old tyre factory made into a school therefore there are limitations, there is a basketball court which is also the main playground for seniors which is also used by juniors for lessons at the same time. The 'gymnasium' advertised on the website is misleading as the equipment is stored in a heap in the corner of a hut next to the playground. The building is old and basic, classrooms lack creativity and displays.

There are clubs after school which are very unimaginative apart from a few and these only run fully in the first term, the second term ECA is taken up by sport so those pupils not participating in sport are left to their own devices for an hour and a half, the third term ECA is virtually non-existant with a various excuses/reasons why they are not running.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Mutiara advertise as running along side the British Curriculum but lessons in lots of subjects have not changed since the school opened 12 years ago so therefore not inline with current British schools. The majority of the staff have no teaching qualifications and teaching assistants are asked to become teachers! There is no DT, Music or Drama department. Students moving from Mutiara back to an English school would be at a disadvantage. There is no school marking scheme and there is confusion amongst the subjects about whether to use grades or levels.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

A few events are held during the year which parents are invited to. There is no PTA.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

If you are moving to Malaysia do not send your children to this school, if you are able to afford the fees at the larger international schools send your children to those.
