Parent's Review of ESCOLA and LIS in Luanda, Angola

Submitted by JJoffres

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

ESCOLA and LIS

In what town or city is this school located?

Luanda

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Escola is a British/South African program and LIS is International Bacc

What grade levels are represented at this school?

ages 3 to Senior in high school

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

most everyone is driven by a private car

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

ESCOLA is a small but well equiped school in the center of the city. It is great for pre-school and for up to the end of grammar school. The school is twin with a collegio which is Portuguese and the children naturally integrate and learn some Portuguese.

LIS is the large school outside of Luanda by several miles and depending on traffic can require an hour to reach and return from. The IB is authorized and they have extensive activities and a large campus.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

None that I know of.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Both have adequat social venues for parents to meet through and for.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

ESCOLA is great for children who are young and for whom the travel would be long. Classes tend to be small as the age rises. The school and teachers are stable and care a lot for the children.

LIS is the larger environment, outside of the city but that may be fine for a family living in the southern suburbs. I particularly love the IB philosophy but it also doesn't suit everyone. ESCOLA is a more classic educational philosophy. There is also quite a large difference in fees: ESCOLA being less expensive because they did not undertake such a large development plan in 2002 when moving down south.
