Parent's Review of Mutiara International Grammar School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Mutiara International Grammar School

In what town or city is this school located?

Kuala Lumpur

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Says it is british curriculum, but is Malaysian in approach

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Aged 5-16

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

By car, walk or bus

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Not good. Very basic. Some investment in IT is heralded, but all schools do it. Extra curricular activities are not very strong. there is one afternoon as part of the timetable, but on the whole very little extra is offered.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

None at all.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Almost non-existent. owners run school with rod of iron. previous headmaster was trying to open school up for partnership but left when he realised it was not going to happen. present headmaster talks a good game, but has no power to actually change things that need changing. that is why the school has had 6 heads in 12 years. No continuity that is worthy of the name. Chaotic systems in the school make it very hit and miss.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I only sent my children there because of the previous headmaster. If I, or he, had known how badly the school was run by the owners then would not have gone near the place. The owners and the school propaganda talk a good game - but their actions prove that it is very mediocre, and that compared to other schools Mutiara is a poor second or even third class school. It is not a proper international school - it is a local school with local teachers and a mindset on education that is light years from good teaching practice. Another correspondent on this review blog has highlighted the religious inequalities, and it is true. The main aim for any school should be for the benefit of the children. At Mutiara it is the owners who put themselves first - and the Halloween party that was introduced by the previous head, and that was such a great success, is now banned because the owners don't like it - says it all. As someone else wrote about this school - AVOID.
