International School of Riga
In what town or city is this school located?
Riga
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International
What grade levels are represented at this school?
students 3-12yrs
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
There is a school bus from Riga, but we drive our children from Pinki. Many parents do this option living from outside the downtown area.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
It is a charming school that really works for the younger kids. It has a fantastic playground that the teachers fully utilize during snack-time so the kids get outside everyday when the temperature is above -10C. There are afterschool activities to include soccer (football), arts and crafts, musical instruments (piano, guitar), languages, drama and ballet to name a few. From kindergarten upward, the kids have swim class or gym class depending on the semester at the swimming hall down the street.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
ISR is an IBO World School fully licensed by the IBO to provide instruction using the Primary Years Program. We transferred from Ecole Mondiale World School in Mumbai, India and have found that our children have been able to pick up where they left off without issue. Having such a wide variety of nationalities has been fantastic. It is not a Latvian school, but a true international one but the teachers are mostly dedicated locals. We adore the preschool teacher Ms Zoja and so does our 3yr old son.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
Previously, ISR did have some issues starting with the principle downward. However, this year, with a new principal in Mr Chalkly, the school has restructured itself into a really nice and cozy place for the kids to be. The teachers are excited and the kids happy. I've not heard any complaints and did have some reservations about the school. We have no regrets at all now. This is a great PYP school. The PTO has grown from 2 parents last year to many more and today's Christmas Bazaar and singing program was a huge success. Everyone had a great time. There is also a group of women who get together every month for drinks to chat. I have found it easy to make friends with the other parents.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Nothing. Just enjoy and be glad to be in such a great school.
