Parent's Review of International School of Iceland in Reykjavik, Iceland

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

International School of Iceland

In what town or city is this school located?

Reykjavik

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-8

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

By car.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

State of the art facilities due to the fact that this very small school is located within a brand new Icelandic primary school. Last term there were only two extra-curricular activities on offer.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Nothing available. No efforts made by anyone at the school. You child will be in a very small class made up of mixed grades.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

No PTA and the school doesn't foster an open door policy and you almost get the idea that they don't want parents to socialize. The school doesn't answer the phone most of the time and they seem to prefer that you e-mail them instead. Not easy when you've just landed and are living out of a suitcase. They know that for a lot of expats they are the only school for them to send their kids to so the insentive of being better then the competition doesn't exist.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Look into homeschooling. Even if you do decide to send you child to this school you'll be doing a lot of supplemental teaching at home. This is our kids fourth international school so far and it hasn't been a good experience for them. We can't wait to leave. Love the country but hate the school.
