Parent's Review of Gems Bolitho School as of May 2010 in Penzance, UK

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Gems Bolitho School as of May 2010

In what town or city is this school located?

Penzance

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British

What grade levels are represented at this school?

3-18

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

walk, car.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Sufficient, although early years resources are outdated, and main school needs a lot doing to it. Had a great 6th form centre, but that is no longer there. A lot of extra-curricular activities if you look for them, but not much after school.

The outgoing head was keen to bring in an extended day, but that has gone a bit by the wayside.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Not bad - assessment is a way of finding out their strengths and weaknesses

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Used to be good - the parents were tremendously supportive, but things have gone downhill recently, with the new owners of the school keeping parents at arms length

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The school used to be a small friendly place to help children do really well. the school had a lot of financial problems, and the school has now been bought by Gems Uk, which is making it more "corporate" - so the family atmosphere is gone, and the teachers who made a difference will leave very soon. We had been told via a parental forum previous "form" that GEMS had shown in getting rid of people they don't like but this was taken off. The school is not what it was, and with no viable 6th form next year there is a real feeling that the school will quietly close. We are moving to Truro School, which is a great relief.
