Parent's Review of Yongsan International School of Seoul in Seoul, Korea
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Yongsan International School of Seoul
In what town or city is this school located?
Seoul
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
American
What grade levels are represented at this school?
K-12
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
They either take the school bus or ride their family's car to school. Many of the older students take subway, taxi, or bus though.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
I think that the facilties are very modern and are always on the right track. They offer a diverse list of after school activities for the elementary students every quarter that includes activities in sports, arts & craft, foreign language, drama, and much more. In middle school, they offer after school clubs/activities, sports teams, and many more oppurtunities. The highschool has a bit of a more varied range and is more competitive. You get the chance to travel internationally to compete with other international schools.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
This is what I most liked about this school. There's more than a teacher to student relationship and everyone makes you feel at home! The students are wonderful about it too and the teachers also try their best to not give them to much attention and embarrassing. Everyone is just really sweet. And when your child is leaving, they transfer files, the teacher grades all your child's work that he/she hasn't passed out in advance, and they talk to the student about anything they need to.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There is a Parent Teacher Organization and a program where you gather once or twice a week and discuss interests. Parents can take ESL classes together, do a culrtural exchange, and much more- all free of charge. You can visit your child's teachers, there is usually a certain time for every school day. And you can also apply to volunteer for your child's class activities or be a 'room mom'.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
It's a great school, not only in academics but in character, extra-curricular activities, and the community. There is usually a very long waiting line and your child will have to take an interview and about 2 tests. But they do make special offers such as ESL to non-English-speaking students.
