Dresden International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Dresden

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International but w/about 65% Germans

What grade levels are represented at this school?

PK - 12 with PYP, MYP and DP programs in place

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most by tram, but some walk, ride bikes or are driven by their parents.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

This is a new campus (3+ yrs, located downtown with a new sports hall, new elementary building,and a nicely rennovated building for the MYP/DP students. There are some after-school clubs and activities for students of all ages. Big focus on student community service projects. Teachers flexible in helping to coordinate clubs that are of interest to the students.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Some couseling available for incoming and outgoing students and families. ESL focus for students with limited English skills. Easy transition for students coming from other IB schools or going to IB schools. Not much support for students relocating to their country of origin with regard to curriculum or getting them any classes they would be missing in their home country that weren't taught at DIS.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Lots of school activities encouraging parent interaction and parent/teacher interaction. Some for fund raising, but many are not. PTA is very active - strongest volunteerism at the elementary level. Try to do a variety of cultural events to make all people from different backgrounds feel welcome.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Get involved in the school and embrace the community. You can make a difference in helping the school to continue to grow and improve.
