Parent's Review of International School of Riga in Riga, Latvia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

International School of Riga

In what town or city is this school located?

Riga

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International school which keeps in touch with local culture

What grade levels are represented at this school?

From Toddlers to Grade 6. Next year Grade 7 and then grade 8 to complete Middle-Year Programme

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

There is a buss service, but most parents take their kids to school as it is centrally located. There is a nice residence complex right next to school and quite a few families live in this complex.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

It is very cosy school. Beautiful gym. They have just bought new computers for the whole IT lab and library has expanded significantly. There is a good choice of free after-school activities from soccer to singing and yoga. Less for very little kids to choose from, but in my experience preschool kids are too tired to do after-school activities anyway.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

It is IB curriculum and we were coming from another IB school. So there was not much curriculum adjustment that was required.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Great sense of community. Most parents know each other. Great PTO organisation. This year the school even organised after-school clubs for parents!!!

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The school has a great director that keeps pushing education standards. Recently the school introduced a new English language programme which worked great for my son who had some problems with English. They are committed to grow the school into higher grades as there is a lot of kids in Grades 3-6. In my view, you'll make a good choice if you enroll your kids there.
