Parent's Review of British School of Houston in Houston,

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

British School of Houston

In what town or city is this school located?

Houston

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Primary through secondary

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus or car/car pool

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

(I need to date this post as November 2010 as the other posts appear to span several years) Facilities and location are poor but there have been some renovations. Substantial rebuilding (from a previous old post) has not come to fruition. Selection of ECAs is mediocre, no athletics, other sports are seasonal(soccer, rugby)

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Curriculum is British therefore no issues as we came from that system. This is the only school in Houston that offers the UK exams and is the only reason our child is there.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There does not seem to be a functioning PTA for children's social activities. There is however a group which arranges an annual Ball. Most social activities are pragmatically organised by parents doing their own thing within their children's year group. Parent groups can be clichy!

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

It very much depends on the age of the child and how long the stay in Houston will be. Nursery/Primary would appear to be excellent. My child is in secondary which I have found lacking. Teacher commitment is high but the school has a long way to go to offer an education worthy of the circa $20,000 fees. Academically higher than UK State System but the 'extras' fall short of what should be expected. Basically if you want UK curriculum there is no choice, for the first time we are considering boarding schools for year 10+. Having said that there are no huge behavioural issues, bullying, drugs etc and our child is fairly happy but not stretched in the 'sports' department which is a shame
