Parent's Review of British School of Amsterdam in Amsterdam, Netherlands
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
British School of Amsterdam
In what town or city is this school located?
Amsterdam
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
British curriculum, high international feeling though
What grade levels are represented at this school?
Nursery till year 13
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Most kids bike to school, the Dutch way. Kids leaving far from school use the door-to-door bus service.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The school buildings are well adapted for teaching purposes. The playground area are a bit small though, especially for the little ones till 8 years old. The indoor sport facilities are very limited.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
There is a very good support of English as a language for non native English speakers. There is a fair support for native languages, such as French and Dutch.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
The PTO is still recent in the school organization and besides a coffee morning, there is little organized through the school for the parents. At the same time, Amsterdam has a lot of great associations for Expat (American, International, French, Italian, Spanish clubs...) which are very busy welcoming new expats.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
The School is a 'well oiled' machine for the small years, till year 7. If you like the structured aspect of the British learning program, you will feel very comfortable.
The Upper School is a more recent development of the School, which needs further detailed inquiry depending on what you are looking for.
