Parent's Review of Agora Portals in Calvia, Spain
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Agora Portals
In what town or city is this school located?
Calvia
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
Local/international
What grade levels are represented at this school?
kindergarten to 18
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
by car or school bus
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The school is new and the facilities are very good - auditorium, indoor pool, sports hall etc.
Some of the advertised facilities do not actually exist however - the ambitious online classroom has never been launched and there is no football or athletics ground.
There is a selection of extra -curricular sports and special interest activities
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
I describe the school as local/international because it is basically a Mallorquin school with international pretensions. A huge emphasis is put on teaching Catalan at the expense of truly international languages and there is a very parochial feel to the faculty. The school may feel international to the locals but it feels very local to the internationals.
There is no program to transit kids in or out of the school and only Spanish high school exams are offered at 16. The school will offer IB in the future but currently is not certified and has no programme.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
No PTAs. Teacher contact is restricted to formal presentations and one maybe two meeting during the year.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Wait for five years and see how it turns out - the school is still a work in progress. Be prepared to learn Catalan or pay for Catalan tuition for your kids or they´ll never get their homework done Consider whether the Spanish High School Certificate will give your kids enough choices if you should leave the island. Be prepared for lots of additional costs and dealing with a very poor administration
