Parent's Review of Tenby International School, Penang in Penang, Malaysia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Tenby International School, Penang

In what town or city is this school located?

Penang

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British style international

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Secondary ( age 11 to 16) no sixth form

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most seem to come by car, including my own. Can be pretty chaotic at drop off and pick up time as the school is on a quite narrow residential road

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Only one word to describe the facilities - poor, there are no decent outside sports facilities, science labs are ok but library, art room and other specialist rooms are poor. However school is moving to new site in September 2011 with purpose built facilities ( I can vouch for this I have been to see the construction). Assuming it is ready facilities should be much better then.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

There was no organised programme but individual teachers were helpful. My son joined in year 9 (he is year 10 now) and was helped in choice of IGCSE options

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

No social activities as far as I know. A parents association has just started and so we need to wait and see.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The school has improved over the past couple of years and recently there seesm to have developed a stable core of good expat teachers as well as some capable local ones. My son is happy and seems to be making progress. If the promise of the new facilities materialises, then it could be a good choice.
