Parent's Review of British School Muscat in Muscat, Oman
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
British School Muscat
In what town or city is this school located?
Muscat
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
British
What grade levels are represented at this school?
Nursery to year 13 (ages 3-18)
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Most come in the car. Those living very close to school walk. There is a organised bus from one of the Armed Forces compounds.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
Facilities are adequate but limited by space available on site. There is a fully shaded pool, sports hall, astroturf pitch, IT labs. There are plans to relocate the school to another site as the school is full with waiting lists for most year groups, when the facilities will improve considerably.
Teaching, however, is good and not dependent on excellent facilities. Extra-curricular facilities are limited for the younger children but increase further up the school and there are different activities each term (some continue through the year). Activities not provided by school can sometimes be found out of school (more football, ballet, horse riding, tennis lessons etc)
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
No transition required for us. We chose this school so there would be no need for repatriation preparation as the curriculum is the same.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There is a parent's association which has recently been revived (as at Feb 2011) and they are trying very hard to organise social events.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Get your child on the waiting list now then make a visit to see if it suits you and your child. We chose BSM so we would be able to move our children back to the UK with limited disruption to their schooling but the curriculum and style does not suit everyone. We are very happy and the children are doing well there.
