Parent's Review of American School of The Hague in Wassenaar, Netherlands
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
American School of The Hague
In what town or city is this school located?
Wassenaar
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International (with American style of instruction)
What grade levels are represented at this school?
Preschool (age 3) to Grade 12 (age 18)
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Bus service is available, even to as far away as Rotterdam. Many students ride their bikes. There are bus stops immediately in front and behind the school, which go to Leiden Central and Den Haag Central.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
Very nice facilities with access to up-to-date equipment. More activities than a student can possibility choose, from after-school language clubs, to ballet, to chess club, to ....!
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The transition program is the best I've seen. Both for new students and exiting students. There is a wonderful transition program for parents, too.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
Good PTO. Like in US schools, parents are quite active in the life of the school. There always parents on campus volunteering, which I take as a positive sign.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
The elementary school has a new principal (Tim Messick) who has really taken the division to the "next level." Small class sizes, teacher assistants, and purposeful curriculum. New "Writer's Workshop" curriculum has been wonderful. I've been very happy. Middle School (5-8) is very interactive and their annual "Project Trips" are a real highlight for the kids. My children have really enjoyed their middle school year. High School (9-12) has a variety of different programs: full IB, a number of AP courses, or general. My children combined IB certificates with AP and general courses so that a program could be tailored to their specific needs and desires.
