Parent's Review of Cambridge English School Kuwait in Hawalli, Kuwait
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Cambridge English School Kuwait
In what town or city is this school located?
Hawalli
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
British
What grade levels are represented at this school?
KG - IGSCE (Year 11)
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Most children are dropped off by their parents. The car parking is terrible. There are school buses. They are in an awful condition and the drivers are not safe.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
There is a cold swimming pool but it is not regularly used. My daughter did swimming during PE 4 times all year. The classrooms are very small and the resources are not good. The kids copy books fall apart very quickly and the teachers make us buy special resources like magnets, clocks, whiteboards. Management do not seem very good. They shout at parents and children and even at teachers.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
It is meant to be the British curriculum but I see no evidence of that. The children at this school are mostly Egyptian and Kuwaiti and can barely speak English. My daughter started in Year 4 and her classmates barely know how to read. The teacher cannot teach the Year 4 curriculum where the majority of students are at a lower level.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There are two parent teacher interviews each year on a Saturday. You can make special appointments through the reception ladies but there's no guarantee the teacher will turn up.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Do not enrol your child at this school. They will not learn anything apart from bad manners, Arabic swear words and behaviour that's fitting to a zoo. From what I can tell, the teachers try their best to control the class but management refuses to remove difficult students or I guess punish them effectively. It really struck me as unnecessary when the Australian head of primary shouted at another parent in the lobby about the parent not following the qu'ran. Who is he to say that? I kept wanting to measure up the best teacher for her but every year the teachers changed. She's at Kuwait English School now, which is a better school. British School of Kuwait and The English School also seem much better choices.
