Parent's Review of Frankfurt International School in Frankfurt, Germany
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Frankfurt International School
In what town or city is this school located?
Frankfurt
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International
What grade levels are represented at this school?
Age 3 to Grade 12 (Yr 13 UK)
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
School Bus, walk, car, public transport. The school bus system works well (at extra cost above the school fees)and is safe and efficient.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
Fantastic facilities including well equipped science, IT and Design technology labs. The sports programme is also very good with an all weather pitch plus large sports halls. The only thing the school lacks is a swimming pool.
Extra curricular activites are excellent with a large "Athletics" (Sports) programme and also a full range of activities from dance and drama to language courses for both students and parents to join.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
Transition into the school has been superb for our 3 children (came from UK state system)and they have settled in without any problems. The Upper School Orientation days were well thought out and helped us and the children with our move. There wasn't a similar programme within the Elementary School, but I could see that our youngest really did settle into the new elementary school and routine without any issues. There is a strong support network between teachers, counsellors and parents and any problems seem to be sorted out very quickly. There is a strong ethos within the student body to welcome newcomers and make them feel part of the school. There is also a programme within the school for those moving on to new countries/schools which I believe is as well run as the newcomers programme.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There is a very active PTG and within the first few weeks of the new school year, a Welcome BBQ is held. There are many parent groups to join including the PTG, "Booster Club" which supports the Sports programme, courses including language tuition, dancing and fitness programmes held on the school site. The school holds quite a lot of community events (applefest, Worldfest, discos, galas). There is so much going on that you don't feel lonely & new for long!!
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
This is a very good school and very experienced in the International system. The school has been established for 50 years and has a about 1800 students enrolled over 3 campuses. Even though the number of students is high in total, It is split into 2 geographical sites (Oberursel and Weisbaden. Weisbaden is from Age 3 to Grade 5 and Oberursel is from age 3 to Grade 12. The Oberursel site is large and has 3 schools on site (Primary, Elemetary and Upper). Each school feels friendly and small but has the benefit of being on one site. The school is a little American in feel - much of the teminology is US and I found that a little bit hard to get used to (E.g. Athletics does not just mean summer track and field sports as it does in UK but it means all sports!!!!), but about 25% - 30% of students are American.
Overall, we are very happy with our move to this school. Our children have certainly grown in academic and social skills and are thriving here.
