YIS is within walking distance from Motomachi-Chugukai train station (which is a direct train from Shibuya, Tokyo). Lots of students catch the train, or walk.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
YIS offers all students a diverse range of subjects across PYP, MYP and IB. The school offers a comprehensive arts, drama, language and sports program in addition to numerous after school activities.
The library offers a great environment in addition to the computer lab.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The PTSA matches new families with 'mentor' families with kids in the same grade and/or from the same home country to help the new family settle well. EAL (English as an Additional Language) support is provided.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
The PTSA (Parents Teachers Student Association) at YIS is very strong. The main role of the PTSA is to provide numerous opportunities for friendship and community spirit to be maintained. From monthly coffee and chat mornings, to trivia nights, monthly cooking lessons, cultural tours and talks, yoga, pilates, Ikebana, arts'n'crafts and many more.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
YIS is a wonderful welcoming school in Yokohama. It is one of the only International Schools in Japan to follow the IB from preschool - Grade 12.
