Parent's Review of International School of Stavanger in Stavanger, Norway

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

International School of Stavanger

In what town or city is this school located?

Stavanger

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre-school through Grade 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus or parent drop off.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are probably the best thing this school has going for it. They are adding on to the existing building and it is a very large school.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

This school does little to help kids transition if they are English speaking already. More effort is made for those who come who are not English speaking. However because of the high turn-over of the student body, children can adapt quickly. No programs to repatriate are available.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a fabulous PA board that tries hard to do things for the school. It is very active and they are quite successful. However, as of late the school administration has made it hard for them to do think outside of the box and bring forth new ideas.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

I would not be sold on the glitz and glamour of this school. The ratio for teacher-aids, counselors and people of that nature is way too small. It is a great school if you have a middle of the road student but little effort or support is offered to high end and low end students. Finding out exactly what the curriculum your child will be learning is nearly impossible. You are provided with a very general summary. The administration is slow to make progress and keep current with modern teaching strategies. There is a music program for middle schoolers but due is not properly staffed to provide a good education in music. The ratio for teacher-aids, counselors and people of that nature is way too small. Finding out exactly what the curriculum your child will be learning is nearly impossible. You are provided with a very general summary. To be honest, this school is past its time. It is surviving on reputation alone.
