Parent's Review of Utama International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Utama International School
In what town or city is this school located?
Kuala Lumpur
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
British
What grade levels are represented at this school?
kindergarten to secondary
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
by car & bus mostly
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The school has a small swimming pool, small library, not so big field and not so big classrooms. It has no canteen/cafeteria, no hall/gym, no projector/modern equipment in classrooms, almost no extra-curricular activities, no expatriate teachers, no parent association and no 'wow' factor! Most importantly, the school has no proper selection of teachers. Just because one studied overseas, it does not mean he makes a good teacher, especially if he can't even communicate properly in English and has difficulty putting simple messages across to students.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The parents seem to have to help themselves in this area. Teachers are not so helpful, especially primary teachers. Many are not well-trained. English level of many teachers are not up to international standards. But most of them enjoy shouting at students whenever they can, sometimes for no apparent reason.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
Non existent.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
There is a need to consider carefully. If possible find out the good and bad of a school before enrolling.
