Parent's Review of Black Forest Academy in Kandern, Switzerland

Submitted by jayadams

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Black Forest Academy

In what town or city is this school located?

Kandern

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

1-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Dedicated Bus from Basel. In addition, some students use the train and many students live nearby and walk.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Excellent recently updated facilities; large gym and auditorium for drama as well as modern classrooms in a safe environment.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

My children attended school in the USA where the school had both an enhanced learning program for gifted kids and a program for students with learning disabilities. I have 4 children and utilized both ends of the spectrum of services. Black Forest Academy met the needs of all 4 of my children and kept each one motivated to learn to the best of their individual ability. The other students and parents helped immensely with the transition. The Guidance Counselors helped them to repatriate to highly selective universities in the USA according to their interests. There is also a "Transition Seminar" for grade 12 students.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

We felt we could easily connect with other parents quite freely and there is a parent-teacher association. We were able to get to know teachers and other parents quite well both "out of school" and at school.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Obviously visit the campus with your child. BFA is quite willing to allow prospective students a day on campus being hosted by another student in the same grade. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to get to know the other students and some teachers. The student body and teachers in the BFA community are kind and caring.
