Parent's Review of I-Shou International School in Kaohsiung, Taiwan

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

I-Shou International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Kaohsiung

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Local

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

bus or car

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities might seem on the whole excellent, although funding appears to be spent on unnecessary facilities which are often under-utlized (such as the new multi-million dollar CAS Centre). Funding would be better spent on updating technology throughout the school, and providing useable spaces for the students. The outdated computers, software and classroom facilities are well below what one might expect given the lavish facade of the school. The majority of extra-curricular activities are after-school academic classes and/or tuition. Although the school is involved in Taiwan's International Schools sporting competition, sport it is not regarded as important by administrators nor the majority of parents.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The school's student base is approximately 90% Taiwanese, and there is no transition program to note. In fact, it can be said that the school is quite culturally insensitive to foreigners, and makes no considerations or allowances for repatriation.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

No parent organizations or social activities exist for parents within the school. The only times you will see parents inside the school is on Anniversary and Sports Days, or to attend their child's special sharing sessions or assemblies.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

This school is best suited to local Taiwanese students. It is an IB school, although is not an accredited international school. The bilingual program of the primary school causes many parents concern about their child's language acquisition, although there are pathways for MOE education as well as the IB's MYP and DP in the junior and high schools.
