Hua Mao Multicultural Education Academy

In what town or city is this school located?

Ningbo

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

K-10

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus or by parents dropping off their children

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The facilities are modern and bright with lots of light. Safety is a top priority with guards at gates, swipe card access, CCTV at all exit points. Classrooms have computers, data projectors and electronic whiteboards. Facilities are extensive with music suite, music auditorium, dance drama studio, concert halls, art gallery, stadiums, swimming pool, art room, science laboratory, Science Museum, two libraries and soft play area.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The school follows the IB curriculum and we are likely to place our children in an IB school when we return home or go to our next posting. Therefore, the transition will be made somewhat easier. The school is using the syllabus from a number of countries to try and aid this transition.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The school has a Parent Teacher Organisation that organises events such as Children's Day. There is a free English class for parents who have English as a Second Language.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

The small class sizes maximise interaction with the teacher. My children have excelled in Chinese and are becoming bilingual which is a real plus for me whilst living in China. I also like the fact that they are making friends from around the world, but also have Chinese friends. I have also found the IB curriculum to have really helped by children to maximise their learning and I want them to stay in this system. Parents should think about what education system best suits their child (Australian, British or American). I couldn't be happier with the education my children are receiving at MEA.
