Parent's Review of American International School of Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American International School of Rotterdam

In what town or city is this school located?

Rotterdam

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American

What grade levels are represented at this school?

PK1 - Grade 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Bus, walk, car or bike.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Good facilities and resources but feel extra- curricular activities could be improved.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

There was no help with transitioning when joining or leaving the school. AISR is a small school so this should be very personal and individualized.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

A PTSA exists but is very cliquey. The different nationalities stick together in their groups and the PTSA is dominated by 'power' families. Not particularly welcoming.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Look at other options in the area before you make a decision. The High School has very few students and the academic standards are not particularly high. The school recently went through a very difficult time financially and the Board seems to have a problem with retaining members. Many families stay for around 2 - 3 years and then move on.
