Parent's Review of The French School of Kathmandu in Kathmandu, Nepal

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

The French School of Kathmandu

In what town or city is this school located?

Kathmandu

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International/French

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre-school ages 2-5, English Section age 5-10, French Section age 5-18

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

School bus, walk, drive

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Classroom facilities and playground are fine. Off-site facilities used for swimming. Every trimester the school offers an array of extra-curricular activities, normally 2 different after-school activities are available each day (Mon-Friday).

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

My son has been at the school since kindergarten, so no transition from a home country was necessary. The English section students are quite international and the staff are able to work closely with and help integrate each child because of the excellent student-teacher ratio. Children are able to work at their own pace. There are no special programs for repatriation in the English section. For French nationals, the curriculum follows the French curriculum so students are able to make a smooth transition back into the French system.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There are no special social activities for parents, but parents have many opportunities to be involved in the school. The school's management committee consists of parents and teachers, as does the school's pedagogical committee.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

This is an excellent school for those seeking a creative, nurturing environment for their children. The school is smaller than the local American and British schools and offers a European-style environment. Being part of the school is like being part of a family. It also has a strong commitment to ensuring that students learn about and appreciate local culture. The school does not have the resources to serve children with learning disabilities, however, so those in need of such programs should look to the American-run school here. We have been extremely pleased with the school, however, and recommend it highly!
