Bern

American teaching school
What grade levels are represented at this school?
k-12
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Most of the students ride the train. The school actually is in a small town, Gumligen, right outside of Bern which is the capital for Switzerland. I happen to take my daughter every day and then she rides the train back home. I really enjoy the views on the way not to mention having her as a captive audience for that long.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
We've only been here for one school year but we've been very pleased with the school. Our daughter is in the 10th grade so it was hard for her to leave her friends back home and come here...she came kicking and screaming. Now we never see her...she is going off on trains all the time for volleyball tournaments, soccer tournaments, school dances, etc. The school offers many extra-curricular activities. Our daughters favorite is every friday during ski season they go skiing. She learned to snowboard while here.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
With all the empending changes of moving abroad our daugher really struggled with her freshman year of high school back home. This year she's adjusted very well to the school and her grades are wonderful. Her teachers all comment on how fast she adjusted to the change. We're very pleased with her education here.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
They have a wonderful PTA at the school and various activities throughout the school year. Family picnics, cookouts, etc. There is even an International day where you can taste food from all the countries represented at the school. They also offer adult language classes, German and French. I enrolled in the French class and enjoyed it a lot.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
The International School in Bern is a Godsend. They were wonderful at getting our daughter adjusted right off. I love it and only wish she could finish out her high school years here.
