Parent's Review of Anglo-American School in Moscow, Russia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Anglo-American School

In what town or city is this school located?

Moscow

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

First Steps - gr.12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most come by private cars, some take shuttle buses from nearest underground station, some walk from nearby 'gated community'.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are state of the art - with two playgrounds, skating ring (in the winter), tennis courts (in the summer), 2 gyms, 2 theaters, computer libraries in upper and lower schools, video & audio equipment etc. Extra curricular activities availible from K grade, holiday day camps etc. Planning to build a swimming pool. Accept small amount of ESL pupils. Established by US, UK and Canadian Embassies in Moscow, very good security.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Each year 30% of children are leaving, each year they mix the classes and assign new homeroom teachers - so each year everyone is new and have to adjust to each other. Apart from this no ajusting program as far as I know. In-house psychologist. Also high turnout of teachers.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

PTO is very very active, teas/coffees for newcomers/with head master/principals. Annual fundraising ball, teacher appreciation gifts etc. Very nice and friendly community.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

When deciding where to live in Moscow, consider the travel times to the school. It is far from the center (North-West) and travel might be frustrating due to congestion. The school runs IB program. See the web site www.aas.ru
