Parent's Review of European School of Munich in Munich, Germany

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

European School of Munich

In what town or city is this school located?

Munich

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

European - International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Kindergarden to year 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

The vast majority use the close by U-Bahn (Underground train, U5 line, station: Therese-Giehse Allee) to get to school but there is also an organised bus service available. Some students are also taken to school by car or those that live close by come by bicycle.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Facilities are good standard, but the school is a bit overcrowded and at the limit of its capacity. Two new buildings are currently being constructed so the situation might improve for the next school year.

There are loads of extra curricular activities for the primary school children and also quite a few for the children in the secondary school (MUN, Science Symposium etc.).

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Children, that have English as their mother tongue language, are being taught very similar to the British system, with the exception of studying a foreign language (French or German), from the first year of primary school onwards. This can be a problem for new children, but there are extra language lessons for these children and most children pick up a language quite rapidly anyway.

I don't think that returning back home, coming from the European School, would be a major problem. I don't know of any special programs, but I am sure there would be help available if needed.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There is a Parents Association and every parent is welcome to participate. They publish Newsletters, Pupils' Directories and organise festivities (i.e. Spring Dance etc.) In some classes other events are organised as well, but this depends on the class teacher.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Admission is currently a difficult issue due to the lack of space. Currently only children of EU and NATO employees are given admission. As mentioned above, they are currently constructing two new buildings, so the situation might change in one or two years. Their website is www.eursc.org
