Parent's Review of The Children's House in Stavanger, Norway

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

The Children's House

In what town or city is this school located?

Stavanger

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

International pre-school

What grade levels are represented at this school?

18 mths to 6 years

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Car pool or by parents.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

Excellent facilities and activities for children. Extra activities include trips to a local farm to enjoy a Norwegian farm christmas, sports day for children, spring carnival and nature walks. The school celebrates English, Norwegian and American holidays enthusiastically and children learn about different cultures.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

My child had been unable to hear for a year. He began to hear 1 month before he started school. His initial response to all the people and noise was to withdraw. The teachers were fantastic and slowly brought him out of his shell. They encouraged other children to play with him and gave him attainable goals. They helped tremendously with his social skills since he had not played with other children for so long because of his extended illness. By the end of the first year he was a very happy, outgoing little boy playing with other children and willing to explore his world. The school takes great care to treat each child individually and work with each child's strengths and weaknesses in a happy and positive environment.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

The school is non-profit and therefor relies on the good will of parents. Many parents comment on the feeling of being in an 'extended family'. There are many activities and opportunities for parents to get involved. Likewise some parents choose to abstain from activities and there is no stigma attached to that either.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

DO IT! The school enjoys a fanatastic reputation within the community, so BOOK EARLY as class sizes are limited in many classes to 6 children per instructor. For the very youngest children, the class size is 5 children per instructor. If you are new to the community you will find yourself with a ready made social group and many parents who are happy to help you with the difficulties involved in settling in a new country. If you are in doubt, check their web site which represents what the school is like and its philosophy quite well. The web site is www.the-childrens-house.no The school as a whole is a very supportive and nurturing environment for children AND parents.
