Parent's Review of The Riverside School in Zug, Switzerland
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
The Riverside School
In what town or city is this school located?
Zug
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
International
What grade levels are represented at this school?
7-12(13)
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Train, bus or driven by parent
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
The school facilities are adequate-they are planning to move to a bigger facility in the next two years. The extra-curricular activites are great. They offer skiing, kayaking, tennis, chess, running, golf, bicycling etc. If a student has an interest in something not already available-they make every effort to arrange it.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
After our visit to the school, the headmaster gave his e-mail address to my daughter and was very accessible to us as well. She was invited to attend classes--to compare with another international school in the area. She was assigned a 'buddy' to show her around and most of the staff made a point to introduce themselves to her. She was told she could visit as often as she liked. They have a counselor that helps students with moves and university placment.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
The total enrollment grew from 60 to 100 this year--so there have not been alot of activities in the past. For next year-the headmaster has organized a group of parents who are willing to head-up a new parents organization. The school almost seems like a 'junior college' most of the students are very mature and self-sufficient. The staff encourage the students to organize their own events-including a very successful annual fundraiser. The kids do a great job.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Go and speak to the headmaster and the main staff members. They offer unique learning situations for students. With a small enrollement, they are able to give alot of personal attention to each student. Don't be put-off by the building. Once you get inside and observe the dynamic environment and the friendliness and confidence of the students-you realize the actual building doesn't matter.
