Parent's Review of American International School of Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands
What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
American International School of Rotterdam
In what town or city is this school located?
Rotterdam
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
American International
What grade levels are represented at this school?
PK1 - G12
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
Bus, bike and car
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
Facilities are adequate for a small school. The range of extra- curricular activities on offer could be better.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The curriculum offered is IPC, IPC Middle Years and IB Diploma. The school continues to think of itself as an American school even though it offers an International curriculum and most of the American families have left due to the nearby American military base closing. I didn't really understand this until after my children joined the school. Not aware of any support from the school to help my children transition.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There may be social activities available but the parents tend to stay in groups within their own nationalities - this is very obvious at pick up at the end of the day.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
There are other international schools in the area - I would now be prepared to travel to The Hague. There are some excellent teachers but as with all schools some are really quite poor and this is more of a problem in a small school. The school also feels as though it's struggling financially, it may not be but that's what it feels like.
